Returning Mothers Day

Celebrating and Empowering Women Returning to Work

About IEEE RM Day

In today’s fast-paced world, more women are breaking barriers, pursuing higher education, and building successful careers. However, many face the difficult choice of stepping back from their careers after marriage and motherhood to care for their families. Upon seeking to return to the workforce, they often encounter resistance from family members and challenges in regaining career momentum.

Since 2014, the Returning Mothers Conference has been empowering women to restart their professional journeys with confidence. In collaboration with IEEE and the WePOWER network of the World Bank, we jointly initiated the idea of Returning Mothers Day.

The International Returning Mothers Day was officially launched during the IEEE Returning Mothers Conference on November 15, 2024, at IISc Bangalore. This global celebration marks a significant step in supporting and empowering mothers returning to the workforce.

What is Returning Mothers Day?

Returning Mothers Day, to be celebrated on September 10th of every year is a global initiative dedicated to recognizing, celebrating, and supporting women who have taken a break from their careers for motherhood and are now re-entering the workforce. This day raises awareness about the challenges returning mothers face and the immense value they bring to workplaces.

Why is it Important?

The transition back to work can be overwhelming for many mothers, filled with hurdles such as regaining career momentum, balancing family responsibilities, and re-establishing their professional identity. Returning Mothers Day provides a platform to advocate for more inclusive work environments, flexible policies, and increased support for women resuming their careers after a break.
